EH Bildu and Esquerra Republicana submit motion about Aysel Tuğluk to Spanish government

A motion was submitted to the Spanish state government by Marta Rosique i Saltor from the Catalan party Esquerra Republicana and Jon Iñarritu García from the Basque Country party Euskal Herria Bildu, members of the Spanish House of Representatives.

In their motion, the two deputies referred to the report published by the Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) on 8 December 2021 on the situation of ill prisoners and, in particular, of Aysel Tuğluk, who is suffering from dementia.

The motion asked whether the Spanish government’s agreements with the Turkish state included human rights clauses, and whether the Turkish government would be encouraged to respect human rights and ensure compliance with democracy.

The parliamentarians asked: “Are you aware of Aysel Tuğluk’s situation?” and added if in meetings with the Turkish government, “are you going to discuss the special situation of Aysel Tuğluk?” The motion also underlined that the political opposition in Turkey is subject to terrorist investigations.

The motion asked:

-Is the government aware of the prison situation in Turkey? Is the government aware of the special situation of Aysel Tuğluk?

-Is there a guarantee of improving the quality of democracy and compliance with human rights on the agenda of the talks with the Turkish government?

-What actions is the Spanish government taking in the international arena to promote respect for human rights around the world and especially in Turkey?

-Are there any clauses in the trade agreements with Turkey associating any operation with respect for human rights in the country?

-What is the government’s view on the detention of the political opposition in Turkey, especially the HDP, on the pretext of “terrorism”?

-Will the government mediate with the Turkish government to improve the situation of prisoners in Turkey? Will you discuss the special situation of Aysel Tuğluk?
