Three killed in military jet crash in Iran

Three people were killed in the crash of a military plane in Iran, according to government sources. The plane crashed into the wall of a school in the northwestern city of Tabriz on Monday morning, an army spokesman said. Both pilots and one civilian were killed.

The school was reportedly closed for pandemic measures at the time of the crash. The third fatality was reportedly not on the plane. According to media reports, the man was found in his car. The crash resulted in a major fire.

The cause of the crash was presumably technical failure. The jet is said to have been an F5 fighter jet used by the Iranian military but built in the USA for training purposes. The USA had sold such aircraft to Iran until before the Islamic Revolution in 1979. In 1980, both countries broke off diplomatic relations.
