Men kill 23 women and 3 children in January

According to the news compiled by bianet from local and national newspapers, news websites and news agencies, men killed at least 23 women and raped three women in Turkey in January 2022.

In January, the deaths of the 34 women were reported in the press as suspicious (in Adana (1), Adıyaman (1), Ankara (1), Antalya (3), Antep (2), Aydın (1), Bolu (1), Denizli (2), İstanbul (2), İzmir (2), Kayseri (1), Kırıkkale (1), Konya (2), Maraş (1), Mardin (1), Nevşehir (1), Ordu (3), Rize (1), Sakarya (2), Samsun (1), Şırnak (2), Trabzon (1), Van (1)).

In Düzce and Hatay, men threatened a woman with death.

In Urfa, the death of a woman was reported in the press as “unidentified murder”. In Denizli, men attempted to kill a woman.

In Konya, a woman killed her husband who had been systematically inflicting violence on her.

Feminicide

In January, men killed at least 23 women. Last January, this number was 22. One of the male perpetrators who killed women was a private security guard. Moreover, men killed a man who was with the women.

The “excuses” of men for killing 15 women were not reported in the news. Men killed two women “because they were jealous”, they killed one woman for “honor” and five women because “they did not want to reconcile” and/or “they wanted to have a divorce”.

In January, 17 women were killed by their husbands, boyfriends, ex-husbands. Two women were killed by their sons while three women were killed by their relatives. The degree of relation between one woman and the man who killed her was not reported in the press.

Men killed over half of the women inside the house.

Men killed 15 women inside the house while they killed eight women in places outside the house such as a workplace, street and hospital.

Men killed over half of the women with firearms.

Men killed 10 women with firearms, while they killed 10 women with sharp objects and two women by strangling them. The method of killing in one feminicide was not reported in the press.

Child murder

In January, men killed at least three children. Last January, this number was one. One child was killed by her/his parents, one child by her/his maternal uncle and mother and one child was killed by a friend.

Sexual assault/rape

According to the news reported in the press, men raped at least three women in January 2022. Last January, men had raped nine women. Men raped one woman systematically.

One woman was raped by a grocery man while one woman was raped by a doctor and one woman was raped by a relative. Men raped three women in places outside the house.

Harassment

Men harassed at least eight women in January. This figure was nine in the same month last year.

One woman was harassed by an academic, one by a politician and one by a municipal employee. The degree of acquaintance between five women and the men who harassed them was not reported in the press.

Men harassed two women by taking photos-videos of them and one woman by masturbating in front of her. Men harassed five women verbally and physically.

Men harassed one woman at home and seven women in places outside of home such as workplaces and streets.

Child abuse

Men abused 27 boys and girls in January. This figure was 12 in the month last year.

Two cases of abuse were revealed after the children were impregnated. One of the children whom the men abused had disabilities.

At least three children were abused by their teachers, one was abused by a canteen worker man and one was abused by their elder brother. The degree of acquaintance between at least 18 children and 22 men who abused them was not reported in the news.

Men abused nine children in places outside of home such as schools and streets. Men abused two children at home. The places where men abused 16 children were not reported in the press.

Violence/injury

Men inflicted violence on at least 57 women in January. This figure was 60 in the same month last year.

Six women who were subjected to violence from men were hospitalized in “critical” condition. Men inflicted violence on at least eight women by violating “protection orders.”

One woman who was subjected to violence from men was from Syria and one was from Kyrgyzstan. Men were systematically violent with at least two women.

At least 45 women were subjected to violence from their fiances, husbands and boyfriends. One woman was subjected to violence from a thief, one from the patient she treated, and one from her elder brother. The degree of acquaintance between eight women and the men who inflicted violence on them was not reported in the news.

Men inflicted violence on five women because “they wanted to break up or they did not want to make peace,” three women because of “jealousy” and one woman for robbing her. Men’s excuses for inflicting violence on 48 women were not reported in the news.

Men injured 42 women by battering them, eight women with sharp objects and five women with firearms. Men set up a bomb in a woman’s car and threw one woman off from a balcony.

Men inflicted violence on 15 women in places outside of home such as cars, workplaces, buses and forests and 40 women at home. The places where men inflicted violence on two women were not reported in the press.

Forced sex work

Men forced at least 24 women to sex work in January. This figure was 28 in the same month last year. 21 women who were forced to do sex work were not citizens of Turkey. There were children among those who were forced to do sex work.
