Another journalist sentenced to prison in Turkey

Journalist Selda Manduz was sentenced to one year and six months imprisonment after the Court of Appeal reversed the acquittal decision made by the 2nd Heavy Penal Court in Kars province.

The journalist is accused of “spreading propaganda for a terrorist organisation”. The court ruled for the deferment of the announcement of the verdict.

The sentence was based on an article Manduz had shared on social media. The article she shared, from Gazete Karınca on 24 January 2017, was critical of Turkish ambitions in northern and eastern Syria. One picture showed two suspected YPG and YPJ fighters. The court of appeal in Kars called this a “clearly criminal act” and rejected the acquittal.
