Long March demanding freedom for Öcalan kicks off in France

The traditional long march organised by the Kurds and their friends every year to demand the physical freedom of Kurdish leader Abdullah Öcalan has kicked off in France.

Kurdish youth movements Tevgera Ciwanên Şoreşger and Jinên Ciwanên Têkoşer have launched a long march in France on Sunday. The march, which was launched in the city of Sierentz, will be concluded in Strasbourg on February 11.

Young people from across Europe are taking part in the action, as well as members of the Democratic Kurdish Community.

Speaking after a minute’s silence in memory of all the martyrs of the Kurdistan revolution, Kurdish youth movement activist Çekdar Serhed said the following: “The isolation imposed on Abdulah Öcalan has left 23 years behind. We believe that the physical freedom of Öcalan will be achieved and we will be in action all the time to ensure it. As the fascist Turkish mentality attacks Kurds in Kurdistan with chemical weapons, NATO must finally stop the arms sales. We as Kurdish youth will be in struggle against all the attacks and conspiracies directed at the Kurdish people. We will embrace the guerrilla struggle and respond to the developments.”

Further speeches by Rabia Baldemir of the Kurdish Women’s Movement in Europe (TJK-E) and CDK-S Co-chair İsmail Kardaş called for action against the genocide in Kurdistan and the aggravated isolation of Abdullah Öcalan.

Participants of the march will cover 20 km today before arriving in the city of Colmar.
