26 women in Yüksekova apply to IHD denouncing social media harassment
When it comes to harassment of women, there is no limits as to the different ways used by male power. Fake accounts were opened with photos of 26 women in Yüksekova district of Hakkari. The person or persons who opened these accounts also sent harassment and threatening messages to the real accounts of women. Some of the 26 women went to the Human Rights Association (IHD) Hakkari Branch and file an application demanding to open a legal procedure about the incident.
Pınar Şen, a member of the IHD Board of Directors, said that women are targeted in Hakkari and its districts and their right to private life is violated.
Şen said: “The applicants noted that the last time that such fake accounts were opened in their names on a social media was on 22 January 2022. Photos belonging to them are taken and shared without permission through these accounts. The applicants stated that they had suffered a great deal of moral damage due to the incident and that their social lives had been greatly affected.
‘Women are targeted’
Saying that photographs of 26 women were taken without permission and shared with their names and surnames, Şen continued: “This is a great attack on the privacy of the women living in the region.”
Stating that the commodification of the female body by the masculine mentality of the society is a product of the ‘power’ policy conveyed by the current system, Şen added: “As human rights defenders we announce to the public and the press that we will not give in, and that we will take the necessary action in this regard by starting a legal process.”
