Turkey: Men kill 34 women in December

According to the news compiled by Bianet from local and national newspapers, news websites and news agencies, men killed at least 34 women and raped seven women in Turkey in December 2021.

In December, the deaths of at least 13 women (in İstanbul (2), Ankara (2), Urfa (1), Kocaeli (2), Diyarbakır (1), Bingöl (1), Maraş (1), Balıkesir (1), Karabük (1), Muğla (1)) were reported in the press as suspicious.

One of the suspicious deaths was that of a trans woman.

In Siirt, the death of one woman was reported in the press as “unidentified murder”. In İstanbul, one man attempted to kill a woman. In Antep, one man threatened his ex-wife “with death”.

The “excuses” of men for killing 24 women were not reported in the news. Men killed seven women “because they did not want reconciliation” and “wanted to have a divorce”.

Men killed one woman because “she did not accept the marriage proposal” and two women because “they were jealous”.

27 women were killed by their husbands, boyfriends and ex-boyfriends. Three women were killed by their family members such as father and son. One woman was killed by her step son and one woman by her son-in-law. The relationships between the two women and the two men who killed them were not reported in the press.

Men killed half of the women inside the house.

Men killed 19 women inside the house while they killed 11 women in places outside the house such as workplaces, streets and parks. The scenes of four feminicides were not reported in the news.

Men killed more than half of the women with firearms.

Men killed 21 women with firearms, 10 women with sharp objects and two women by battering them. The method of killing in one feminicide was not reported in the press.

Sexual assault/ Rape

In December 2021, men raped at least seven women. Last December, men raped four women.

One woman raped by men was from Uzbekistan, one woman was from Azerbaijan and one woman was from Russia.

One woman was raped by her ex-boyfriend and one woman was raped by her husband. The relationships between five women and the 11 men who raped them were not reported in the press.

Men raped five women in places outside the house such as woods and streets while they raped two women inside the house.

Harassment

Men harassed at least 12 women in December 2021. This figure was 11 in the same month last year.

Two women were harassed by their doctor and one woman was harassed by her neighbor. Nine women did not know the men who harassed them.

Men harassed 12 women verbally and physically. Men harassed women in places outside such as subways and streets.

Child abuse

Men abused at least 37 boys and girls. This figure was eight in the same month last year.

At least 17 children were harassed by three teachers, seven children were harassed by a religion teacher, one child was harassed by her “husband” whom she was forced to marry, one child was harassed by their stepfather, and one child by a relative. The degree of acquaintance between 10 men and at least nine children whom they harassed was not reported in the press.

Men harassed two children at home and 35 children outside (streets, grocery stores, religious course).

Violence/injury

Men inflicted violence on at least 61 women in December. This figure was also 61 in the same month last year.

Eight women who were subjected to violence from men were hospitalized in “serious” condition. Men inflicted violence on at least five women by violating “restraining orders.” One man attacked a woman after breaking the ankle monitor.

One of the women who was subjected to violence from men was from Syria. Men had been systematically violent towards at least three women.

At least 45 women were subjected to violence from their fiances, husbands, and boyfriends. Two women were subjected to violence from their actor colleagues, one woman from a relative of hers, one woman from a friend of hers, one woman from a deliverer, one woman from a political party executive, two women from her sons, and one woman from the police. The degree of acquaintance between seven women and seven men who inflicted violence on them was not reported in the press.

Men inflicted violence on seven women because “they wanted to break up or did not want to make peace” and four women because of “jealousy.” Men’s “excuses” for inflicting violence on 50 women were not reported in the press.

Men injured 40 women by battering them, nine women with sharp objects, seven women with firearms, and three women by burning them. Men inflicted violence on two women by digital means.

Men inflicted violence on 12 women outside (car, workplace, bus, forest) and 41 women at home. The places where men injured six women were not reported in the press. Men inflicted violence on two women in digital environments.

Forced sex work

Men forced at least 130 women to sex work in December. This figure was 43 in the same month last year. 35 women who were forced to sex work were not citizens of Turkey. There were children among those who were forced to sex work.
