Two more drones target US-led International Coalition forces in Iraq
Two bomb-laden drones were detected and destroyed at the al-Assad airbase in western Iraq in the early hours of the morning, an official from the International Coalition told AFP.
This is the second time a similar attack has taken place in the last 48 hours. On January 3, a Coalition official stated that the Baghdad airport, which has a military base with “very few coalition forces”, was “targeted by two drones”. The official announced that these vehicles were shot down. The inscription “Revenge operation for the commanders” on the unmanned aerial vehicles attracted attention.
The attacks coincided with the second anniversary of the killing of Iranian general Qassem Soleimani and the Deputy Head of the Hashd al-Shaabi, Abu Mahdi Muhendis. Quds Force Commander Soleimani and an engineer, Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, were killed in a drone attack by the USA at Baghdad airport on 3 January 2020.
There have been dozens of attacks with drones and rockets against American interests and troops in Iraq in recent months. While no one has claimed responsibility for the attacks, the US systematically blames pro-Iranian groups.
