2 of the 31 provinces in Iran record 2,4000 child marriages this year

In Iran, child marriages are encouraged. In 2021, 2,400 child marriages were registered in the provinces of Sistan and Baluchistan alone, according to the data provided by the Iran Population Planning Directorate.

Last Spring, the National Statistics Center of Iran announced that 9,753 young girls between 10 and 14 were married.

During the same period, 45,522 girls between 15 and 19 years old were also married.

Young girls between 10 to 14 years old gave birth to 969 infants, and young women between 15 and 19 years old gave birth to 44,896 infants.

The marriages of over 9000 girl children between 10 to 14 in spring 2021 show a 32% increase compared to the same period last year.

Iran has 31 provinces and the main factor in the occurrence of child marriages is the civil law itself.

According to recorded data, at least 17 percent of marriages in the country are with girls under the age of 18.

In Article 1041 of the Iranian Civil Code, the earliest marriage age is 13 for girls and 15 for boys.

Child marriages are legitimized by laws as well as encouraged by religious fatwas.
