Another prisoner dies in suspicious circumstances

It was alleged that İlyas Demir (32) who was serving an aggravated life sentence in Bolu T Type Closed Prison, was found dead in the isolation cell he was held in. The news of Demir’s suspicious death was conveyed to his family in the center of Urfa by the neighbourhood’s headman. Thereupon, the family called the prison administration, which confirmed that the news of his death was true, but did not give any information about the cause of death.

Demir’s older sister, Mahide Demir, told Mezopotamya Agency (MA) that her brother has been held in different prisons since 2013, and that he has psychological problems but was not treated.

Stating that their applications to the prison administration for the treatment of his brother Demir were not processed, Demir added: “Keeping him in an isolation cell was a crime. He should have been treated in hospital. Last year, when we went to my brother’s closed visit, my brother cut the front of his hair with a razor, and he could not cut the back of his hair because his hand could not reach it. Doesn’t the prison administration send hairdressers to the detainees?” Stating that they will file a criminal complaint against the prison administration, Demir added: “When we get a forensic medicine report from the ATK, we will pursue it through our lawyers. There is no such justice. My brother was arrested on the grounds that he had committed murder.”

Stating that they set out from Urfa to take the body of Demir, who was taken to the morgue of Ankara Forensic Medicine Institute (ATK), his older sister, said that the body will be buried today in Eyyüp Prophet Cemetery in the Eyyübiye district, in the center of Urfa.
