Austrian Parliament adopts motion in support of the HDP
Members of the Austrian opposition party Social Democratic Party (SPÖ), Katharina Kucharowits and Petra Bayr, submitted a motion with the title “closure case against HDP” to the commission that investigates national parliament resolutions.
The motion which proposes that the Vienna government should support the HDP that the AKP-MHP government wants to shut down by criminalization, was also supported by the commission’s government members.
The motion, which is thus considered adopted by the Austrian Parliament, includes appeals to the government led by Karl Nehammer, especially the Ministry for European and International Affairs.
Remarking that the Austrian government should strive for Turkey to democratize and establish a rule of law, it highlighted that HDP should not be shut down.
“If HDP is closed, Turkey would breach the international law and agreements to which it is a party,” the motion stated, noting that HDP is Turkey’s third largest political party.
In the resolution text of the Austrian Parliament, it was also highlighted that HDP’s existence was crucial for the representation of the pluralist system in Turkey, and it was said that the claims of the Turkish judiciary against HDP were unjustified.
