‘Freedom for Abdullah Öcalan’ protest in Strasbourg is on its 16th day
The vigil launched in Strasbourg on December 1 as part of the Freedom for Abdullah Öcalan Initiative’s “Dem Dema to Azadiyê” [Time for Freedom] campaign, is now in its 16th day.
On Thursday morning, December 16th, internationalist activists and a diverse group carrying out diplomatic activities arrived at the action area and declared that they had taken over the “Take Action for Abdullah Öcalan” campaign organised under the motto Freedom Shaill Prevail; Take Action for Abdullah Öcalan”.
The statement was made by Eric Brommer and Amin Engin on behalf of internationalist revolutionaries.
Speaking here, Asmin Engin said, “Turkey’s position is deteriorating by the day. We will continue to struggle until Leader Apo [Öcalan] is freed. We will carry on with our actions.”
‘PKK TOOK EXTREMELY SUCCESSFUL STEPS’
Speaking after, Eric Brommer said, “Today, as internationalists, we got here before European institutions and organizations. We gathered here to demand Öcalan’s freedom. As it is well known, the human rights on which European institutions and organizations are founded apply only to European citizens. That is why, as a German internationalist, I came here and joined the action.
When the Turkish authorities imprisoned Rêber Apo in 1999, they thought they were imprisoning an average person, but they had no idea that Rêber Apo would become a symbol of immense resistance. We have joined here today to oppose fascism.
When the Freedom Movement called for a cease-fire in 1993, they aimed to resolve the Kurdish question peacefully. It’s still the same. During this period of time, the PKK once again accomplished highly successful good steps. In response, the state launched attacks.
Furthermore, the Turkish state launched strikes on Northern and Eastern Syria with the weaponry and cooperation of the German state. The Turkish state did not just conduct one genocide against peoples; it perpetrated several genocides.
Now is time when everyone must choose their own side and take sides with the truth and justice. They should take side with the PKK, democracy and freedom. This is why we say Rêber Apo should be free!
The PKK’s armed campaign against ISIS was forgotten in a short time. We are fully aware that, as internationalists, they participated in the Rojava battle and played a vital role in the fight against ISIS.
Despite all of this opposition, the PKK’s inclusion on the Council of Europe’s “terror list” is a gift to Turkey.
The time has come to remove the PKK from Europe’s terror list. It’s also on the terror list in Germany,” Brommer said.
According to the action plan “Freedom Shall Prevail; Take Action for Abdullah Öcalan,” Kurds living in the Düsseldorf and Cologne areas of Germany are expected to participate in the vigil on Friday, December 17.
