Severely ill prisoner Abdülrezzak Şuyur dies in Şakran T Type Prison

Abdülrezzak Şuyur, a 56-year-old seriously ill prisoner held in İzmir Aliağa Şakran T Type Prison, has died.

Shuyur, who was detained in Muğla in 1993, was tried for “membership in a terrorist organization” and sentenced to life imprisonment.

Shuyur, who was deported to Şakran after Siirt and Antep prisons, was diagnosed with lung cancer 3 months ago. Shuyur, who also suffered from asthma, was not treated after his cancer diagnosis.

He last met with his son 2 weeks ago and no more news had been received from him since then.

His brother Muhsin Şuyur went to prison on Tuesday to see Şuyur, who had not called for 2 weeks. The prison administration said that they would not be allowed to meet with him without giving any reason.

The prison administration, then, called Shuyur’s family one hour after his brother left the prison, to inform them that Muhsin had died. Shuyur’s request for release last year was not accepted despite the fact that he had only 14 months left to serve.

‘There is a contradiction in his death’

According to the information received from Yunus Şuyur, Muhsin’s brother, a petition was given to continue his treatment outside one month ago. No response was given to it. Stating that he had contacted his brother a month ago, Yunus Şuyur said: “We wonder how he got into this situation in a month. We don’t know if he had surgery or not. We hadn’t heard from him for two weeks. He wasn’t making weekly phone calls either. When did he actually die? What happened to him? There is contradictory information about the situation.”

His family, who set out from Istanbul and Siirt, went to Izmir to take Şuyur’s body.

The man will be buried in Eruh district of Siirt after legal proceedings.
