Vigil for Öcalan’s freedom in Strasbourg in its third week

In Strasbourg, the last week of the vigil “Freedom shall prevail, act for Öcalan” is underway. On Monday, members of the umbrella organisation FCK, organised in Baden-Württemberg, took over the vigil on the Place de la République, organised on the initiative of the action group “Freedom for Öcalan”. The 70-member group travelled from cities such as Stuttgart, Heilbronn, Esslingen and Ludwigsburg for the event. Also taking part is Sait Öztürk, co-chair of FCK.

“Turkey’s disregard for the human rights of Abdullah Öcalan is known to be particularly shameless. It is in fact aimed at punishing the entire Kurdish society. As Kurds, we therefore find it more than worrying that the Turkish state’s anti-human and anti-human rights treatment of Öcalan on the prison island of Imrali is being tacitly accepted in Europe,” Öztürk said during a speech.

Öztürk remarked that it was time for Europe to increase the pressure and demand that Ankara fulfil its obligations. “The ignorance in the face of the “great injustice” on Imrali, where the Kurdish leader is being subjected to a detention regime aimed at his physical and physical destruction, shows that Europe has failed the test of democracy, human rights and freedom. But this is exactly what human dignity forbids. Nevertheless, we will not tire of continuing our struggle and reminding Europe and its institutions that they have to ensure the full realisation of human rights where this is not given,” Öztürk concluded.

The further planning of the vigil, which has been going on since 1 December, foresees that tomorrow, Tuesday, the action will be carried by the nationwide umbrella organisation KON-MED. On Wednesday, Kurdish activists from the south of France will take over the vigil. For Thursday, internationalists and a diplomatic network have announced their participation. The Kurdish communities from the Düsseldorf and Cologne area will conclude the vigil on Friday.
