Peshmergas carry out an anti-Islamic State operation in South Kurdistan

An anti-Islamic State operation by the Peshmergas has been taking place in the municipality of Zinane in the southern Kurdish district of Kifrî for two days. In the last few weeks, the activities of the Islamic State have increased and many Peshmergas as well as civilians have lost their lives in the region. Large quantities of IS ammunition and equipment were confiscated during the operation.

According to reports from the South Kurdish news agency RojNews, Peshmerga commander Mihemed Çewrî said: “On the second day of the operation, the area between the villages of Xere, Pelkane and Duracî was combed. This area was the main enclave of ISIS. We stormed a large ISIS base near the Mehe River. We captured ten tunnels and many other ISIS hiding spots. In these places there were 100 bags of flour, 50 bags of rice, tomato paste, lentils, tea, and oil. We also recovered more than a hundred 82 millimetre mortar shells. We were also able to seize a car bomb, a motorcycle bomb and a bicycle bomb.”

People with ISIS connections captured

The management of the security forces in Sulaymaniyah also announced that an ISIS cell had been dug up during an operation in Halabja. Weapons and explosives were found. According to the statement, the group had planned attacks in Sulaymaniyah, Halabja and Germiyan.
