41 Yazidis exhumed from mass grave reburied in Shengal

During the genocidal onslaught of ISIS on the Yazidi town of Shengal (Sinjar) in southern Kurdistan (northern Iraq) in August, 2014, thousands of Yazidis were murdered, kidnapped and sold in slave markets. Thousands of them still remain missing.

Numerous mass graves have been discovered in the region in recent years. Baghdad Forensic Medicine Institute completed the identification of 41 Yazidis who were exhumed from mass graves.

On Thursday, the bodies were reburied following a funeral ceremony held in the Kocho village of Shengal on November 9, International Day of Commemoration and Dignity of the Victims of the Crime of Genocide and of the Prevention of this Crime.

The Baghdad Forensic Medicine Institute is still working on the identification of 400 other Yazidi Kurds.

Iraqi President Barham Salih released a statement to mark November 9 and said; “On the International Day of Commemoration and Dignity of the Victims of the Crime of Genocide and of the Prevention of this Crime, we remember with great sorrow the victims of the massacres against the Yazidis, the victims of the Anfal genocide, mass graves and the chemical bombing in Halabja.”
