Martyr Armanc Zurich Assembly members take over Freedom for Öcalan Vigil in Strasbourg

The Freedom for Öcalan Initiative launched the Freedom for Abdullah Öcalan Vigil on 25 June 2012 in Strasbourg. The action aimed at breaking the isolation imposed upon Kurdish people’s leader Abdullah Öcalan and ensuring his freedom.

Every week, the Kurds and their friends in Europe continue the action, which has been carried out with determination for the past 9 years in the area where various European institutions are located.

Members of the Martyr Armanc Assembly from Zurich took over the vigil, which is held between 7.30 am and 4.30 pm seven days a week.

The group includes Cüneyt Hacıoğlu, Übeyit Kutum and Vedat Ürper.

Speaking on behalf of the group, Cüneyt Hacıoğlu said that for ten years, the Kurdish people have been exposing the crimes against humanity committed by the Turkish state, but despite that, the European institutions have not come up with any permanent solution.

Stating that the silence of European countries and institutions is complicity in crime, Cüneyt Hacıoğlu added that the Kurdish people will not give up their struggle. “The isolation imposed on our Leader means the isolation of our people. Therefore, the end of the isolation of Leader Apo is the development of a peaceful and democratic solution to the Kurdish problem. Leader Apo’s freedom means the freedom of the Kurdish people who have been going through massacres for years and whose rights have been usurped.”

Calling on the Kurdish people and their friends to claim the vigil in Strasbourg, Cüneyt Hacıoğlu said that the place where anti-democratic practices are tried and implemented in Turkey is İmralı, and that the way to establish a free future is through the struggle against isolation.
