KON-MED calls for strong participation in Berlin rally against the PKK ban
28 years ago, the then German government issued a ban on the activities of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) in Germany. Since then, this ban has not only been continued by German politics but has been constantly tightened. On November 27, a broad alliance will take to the streets in Berlin and demand “Lift the PKK ban, end the war, promote a political solution!” Nationwide mobilization is underway for the demonstration. The Confederation of Kurdistan Communities in Germany (KON-MED) released a statement calling for strong participation in the demonstration.
“The Kurdish people have been subjected to massacres and genocidal attacks in Kurdistan, which has been divided into four parts for more than a hundred years. Their culture, language, belief and their right to life have been taken away and they have been condemned to live as a slave nation in the 20th century. For these reasons, the Kurdish people have rebelled many times, the latest of which was initiated by the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK). As a rebellion against denial and genocide, the PKK represents the existential identity of the Kurdish people,” the KON-MED statement said.
‘TURKEY TAKES ADVANTAGE OF THE PKK BAN’
The statement included the following remarks:
“Regional and global colonial powers, notably the fascist Turkish state, have ignored and not recognized this reality for years. The freedom struggle has been terrorized through international conspiracies against the Kurdish people in the person of the PKK.
On November 26, 1993, the German state banned the PKK. In 2002, it was included in the EU terror list. Taking advantage of this ban, the Turkish state has continued its genocidal plans against the Kurdish people unabated. Based on these unlawful decisions, Turkey has militated against democratic and peaceful solutions to the Kurdish question in the Middle East. In short, the PKK ban criminalizes the Kurds in every sphere of life and constitutes an impediment to the democratic circles in Germany to express their opinions.
This situation is unacceptable. The PKK is an organization of the Kurdish people. It is a freedom movement that has paid huge prices to protect the peoples of the Middle East from ISIS. It is international and universal. Following the PKK ban, the most basic right of the Kurdish people living in Europe which is their right to life has been taken away from them. The Kurds have faced myriad unfair practices and remain under pressure.
‘A SERIOUS CONTRADICTION FOR THE WEST’
The PKK’s democratic and libertarian outlook carries a lot of weight with the people in the Middle East. The fact that such a movement is still banned in Germany and Europe is a serious contradiction for the western societies. The PKK ban poses a problem for German democracy. The German government has caused a huge suffering to millions of Kurds, as well as a serious damage to German democracy with the introduction of this policy of ban and criminalization that has been in place for 27 years. Germany has continued to sell weapons to Turkey and endorsed the genocidal war that has been going on in Kurdistan for years. In the meantime, it is working to disseminate the PKK ban and the criminalization policy against the Kurdish people among other European countries. Germany continues to cooperate with Turkey to pursue the policies of denial, destruction and assimilation against the Kurdish people for the sake of its investment and geostrategic interests.
That’s why we must fight together to lift this ban!
As KON-MED, all our components, particularly all our Democratic Kurdish Community Centres in Germany together with dozens of Germans, Kurdish and other democratic migrant organizations, we shall object to the PKK ban for a feminist, ecological and democratic society that promotes freedom on the 28th anniversary of the PKK ban. We shall raise our voice on November 27 on the streets of Berlin together with our internationalist friends to lift the PKK ban!
We call upon all our dear friends, especially the people of Kurdistan, to join the march in Berlin, Germany against the PKK ban on Saturday, November 27, 2021.
