Heyva Sor launches aid campaign for migrants on the Belarusian-Polish border

The Kurdish Red Crescent organization Heyva Sor a Kurdistanê has launched an aid campaign for migrants on the Belarusian-Polish border and is appealing for donations. “In bitter cold, a humanitarian drama is playing out at the gates of the EU. People in the border area between Poland and Belarus, a significant number of whom are Kurds, are freezing, starving and dying. They are left to certain death,” the organization said on Monday.

For months, the numbers of migrants trying to cross the Polish border to the safety of the EU have been increasing. Facing 2,000 to 3,000 migrants, Poland has deployed more than 15,000 soldiers and police to “defend” the border, forcibly pushing intercepted refugees back to Belarus. Hundreds of pushbacks by Polish authorities have already been carried out.

According to official Polish statements, several people have already been recovered dead on the Polish side. According to Heyva Sor a Kurdistanê, more than twenty Kurdish migrants have died at the EU’s external border. This number is likely to increase significantly with temperatures below freezing. “In order to prevent further deaths, we want to help together with our Kurdish partners in Europe in a quick and uncomplicated way. The humanitarian situation on the border is catastrophic and is coming to a head as winter approaches. The catastrophe is already unmistakable. Let’s not leave the people alone.”
