HDP Report: 104 suicide attempts, 1847 workplace homicides

The Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) Work Commission published a 514-page report titled “Agenda and violations of rights in the field of labour” covering the period from January 1st to October 30th. Deputy Necdet İpekyüz of the HDP for Batman presented the report to Minister Vedat Bilgin during the Ministry of Labor and Social Security and its affiliates’ budget negotiations.

The report includes daily data on labour rights violations, work-related homicides, and the struggle. There was information provided concerning the demands of the workers who were involved in the strikes, as well as the people who were fired because they worked in different fields in Turkey and were unionized.

The report also highlighted inflation and poverty numbers, stating that Turkey ranks considerably behind other European Union countries.

ATTACKS ON LABOR ORGANISATIONS

Detentions and arrests of labour union activists, as well as statements of support issued by political parties and unions in response, were included. The report, which comprises declarations made by representatives of labour institutions and unions, also included information concerning resignations in the field of health during the pandemic period.

The incidents observed from province to province are included in the report, which also includes harassment, mobbing, and violence faced by women working in the sector of labour.

DETENTIONS, WORKPLACE HOMICIDES, SUICIDES

The report included the following information on rights violations and strikes between January 1 and October 30:

* Workers decided to go on strike 60 times, 18 of those strikes were carried out.

* Press releases, protests, and other events were blocked at least 99 times by enforcement officers. 1,460 workers were detained as a result of these operations.

* According to ISIG data, 1,847 workers died as a result of workplace homicides.

* Between 1 January and 30 October 2021, 76 citizens lost their lives as a result of at least 104 suicide attempts due to economic reasons.

* At least 1436 workers were injured as a result of negligence.

* There were at least 1,801 violations of workers’ rights.

* For a long period of time, there has been an average of 19 protests organized by the workers every month.
