TUC Fringe Meeting with the Kurdish People and the Need for Peace and Democracy

The TUC Fringe Meeting with the Kurdish People will take place on 14 September at 12.30.

The GFTU said: “The Turkish government is engaged in one of the world’s most anti-democratic actions against elected representatives of the main opposition parties. This is a situation that British trade unionists are increasingly concerned about throughout the world.”

The meeting will be chaired by Doug Nicholls, General Secretary of the GFTU.

The panelists are Havin Guneser and Hişyar Özsoy.

Havin Guneser is a lifelong activist with the International Kurdish freedom movement. She is an engineer, journalist, and a women’s rights activist who writes and speaks extensively on the topic of revolution in Rojava. She is one of the spokespersons of the International Initiative “Freedom for Abdullah Öcalan – Peace in Kurdistan” and translator of several of Öcalan’s books.

Hişyar Özsoy is a member of parliament for the Bingöl province (Çewlîg in Kurdish) and HDP spokesman for foreign affairs in the Parliament of the Turkish Republic. He is a member of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), where he serves as the vice-president of the European United Left–Nordic Green Left (GUE/NGL) group, and he is a member of the board of the Progressive Alliance. He holds a PhD in political anthropology from the University of Texas – Austin, and worked as a lecturer in political anthropology at the University of Michigan.
