Up to 30 years prison sentence demanded for HDP’s Demirel

The trial of former Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) MP Çağlar Demirel, which was overturned due to the failure to combine the KCK Main Case with the case in which she was sentenced to 7 years and 6 months in prison, has resumed. The first hearing of the case was held at Diyarbakır 5th High Criminal Court today.

Demirel, who is in prison, and her lawyers Serdar Çelebi and Şeyhmus Bayhan attended the hearing.

Demirel said, “There were roughly 50 CDs and books about women in my house. They recorded everything and I signed it. They claim to have gone to the bathroom, but I did not witness it. They tried to persuade me to sign a report about a bag they claimed to have discovered in the bathroom. My lawyer had not yet arrived at the time. I was curious about what was in the bag, but they didn’t show it to me. I declined to sign that section.”

For the second time in the KCK case, the prosecutor demanded that Demirel be imprisoned on charges of “membership in a terrorist organization”.

The prosecutor ordered Demirel’s continued imprisonment, demanding a prison sentence of up to 30 years on allegations of “membership of a terrorist organization” for each indictment.

The court decided to keep Demirel in custody and granted the lawyers’ pleas for additional time to argue against the merits opinion, adjourning the hearing to September 21.
