Memorial for lawyer Ebru Timtik

Lawyer Ebru Timtik lost her life a year ago, after 238 days of hunger strike demanding a fair trial. Timtik was commemorated by her colleagues and friends at her grave in Gazi, Istanbul.

Timtik’s family and lawyers from the People’s Law Office, Contemporary Lawyers Association, Lawyers for Freedom and Asrın Law Office attended the commemoration.

The police blocked the entrance of the Gazi Cemetery before the commemoration and checked the identity of those wanting to attend the ceremony. A banner reading “Lawyer Ebru Timtik is immortal” was unfurled and candles were lit during the memorial, which began with a minute’s silence.

Seda Şaraldı, a lawyer from the People’s Law Office, said that Ebru Timtik lost her life reclaiming a fair trial and left the echo of that cry for justice to the whole world. Emphasizing that Ebru Timtik has been the people’s lawyer all her life, Şaraldı added that they will protect the legacy of her struggle.

After the speech, Çiğdem Akbulut, Head of the Istanbul Branch of the Contemporary Lawyers Association, read the statement on behalf of the lawyers.

“We have been without Ebru for a year, but we are not hopeless. When we lost Ebru, we carried her body, which weighted just 38 kilos after 238 days of death fast. We shouldered a 38 kilo giant. Her body, which was as small as a drop of water, caused storms all over the world. Her struggle for justice has shaken 2 million lawyers around the world. Ebru has guided us throughout her life, sometimes as a friend, sometimes as a sister, sometimes as a mother. With her resistance, she showed the struggle to all the peoples of the world.”
