Three jailed in Van for protesting the murder of Kurdish family in Konya

Three people have been arrested in Van for taking part in a demonstration against the murder of the Dedeoğulları Kurdish family in Konya. Rojhat Duman, Dilovan Duru and Nurullah Pekbay are accused of violating Turkey’s assembly law and resisting state authority. They had been in police custody since the weekend. Only today, Friday, they were transferred to the criminal division of the district court in Van.

The detentions were made on Saturday during a demonstration in the center of Van that was attacked by police with tear gas and water cannons, and the following day during raids. Among them were Hazal Karabey of the HDP party council and Sinan Ok, a research assistant to HDP deputy Muazzez Orhan. The court ordered Karabey and Ok, as well as five other detainees, to report to the authorities as a preventive measure.

The Dedeoğulları family, originally from Kars, were the victims of a racist attack a week ago on Friday. Seven members – Yaşar Dedeoğulları, Barış Dedeoğulları, Serpil Dedeoğulları, Serap Dedeoğulları, İpek Dedeoğulları, Metin Dedeoğulları and Sibel Dedeoğulları – were killed by Turkish nationalists. After the killings, the house was set on fire. The massacre of the family has caused anger and horror among the Kurdish population. In numerous cities in Turkey as well as in Northern Kurdistan, but also abroad, outrage over the family’s extermination drove angry people into the streets. In addition to the HDP, the CHP, EMEP, ESP and 23 NGOs based in Van had called for participation in last Saturday’s protest in the city.
