British union GFTU organises webinar on Kurdish issue today

The GFTU is organising a special webinar on the Kurdish issue today, 16 June, at 6:30 pm UK time. The webinar will be joined by HDP co-spokesperson for Foreign Affairs Hişyar Ozsoy and Bedia Ozgukce Ertan, a former MP and Co-Mayor of Van. . 

The union said presenting the webinar: “One of the most worrying attacks on a democratic political party and a people in the world today is what is happening to the Parliamentary Party the HDP (People’s Democratic Party) in Turkey and the Kurds.

GFTU delegates to our last three Conferences have heard first-hand from HDP MPs who have visited us about what is happening. We also asked our lawyer Paul Scholey and TSSA General Secretary Manuel Cortes to visit Turkey and the Kurdish regions for us. Manuel and Paul now strongly encourage you to get informed about the situation by joining in with this webinar. The world knows too well from the 1930s what consequences can follow from the banning of well supported parliamentary parties and attacks on ethnic groups.”

Interview with GFTU General Secretary

Ahead of the meeting Doug Nicholls, General Secretary of the General Federation of Trade Unions (GFTU), was interviewed by journalist Erem Kansoy. 

Nicholls commented on the Turkish state’s repression of political opposition and the attempts to ban the Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP). 

The interview was prepared with the support of the Freedom for Ocalan Campaign and the Peace in Kurdistan campaign in collaboration with Medya Haber TV and Sterk TV.
