Education suspended in Sheikh Maqsoud and Ashrafiyah due to the lack of heating fuel under embargo

The Sheikh Maqsoud and Ashrafiyah Neighborhoods Education and Training Committee announced in a decree on Tuesday that the schools affiliated with the Democratic Autonomous Administration and sthe chools jointly run by the Autonomous Administration and the transitional government have suspended education until further notice.

Zehide Reşid, Co-Chair of the Education and Training Committee, stated that fuel supplies to educational institutions had run out due to the embargo imposed by the transitional government on two neighborhoods. She said that the current situation had a serious psychological impact on students.

According to Zehide Reşid, school attendance has fallen by 60 percent recently, and education could not be sustained in a healthy manner under these conditions. She pointed out that nearly 4,000 students in two neighborhoods who received education according to the Autonomous Administration curriculum could not access their textbooks due to the embargo.

The published decree called for the immediate lifting of the embargo imposed on the neighborhoods of Sheikh Maqsoud and Ashrafiyah.

There are a total of 13 schools in Sheikh Maqsoud and Ashrafiyah. Three of these schools operate under the Autonomous Administration, while 10 are jointly run by the transitional government and the Education and Training Committee. Around 25,000 students are enrolled in primary, middle, and high schools in the two neighborhoods.

Meanwhile, the Aleppo Democratic Education Community Committee also discussed the possibility of extending the closure of schools until after January 4, 2026, in line with the assessments of monitoring committees regarding the impact of the embargo on education and in consultation with the Teachers’ Union and the Students’ Union in two neighborhoods.
